In a significant move to bolster Kenya’s circular economy, Prime Bank has announced a strategic partnership with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Centre. The collaboration aims to scale up the safe collection and recycling of electronic waste while creating sustainable green jobs, with a special focus on empowering women and youth.
The partnership is designed to build on the WEEE Centre’s proven track record. Since its inception in 2012, the Centre has established itself as a leader in environmental stewardship, having safely processed more than 10,000 tonnes of e-waste. Its work has involved decontaminating over 800,000 electronic devices, preventing hazardous materials from polluting the environment.
By choosing responsible recycling over dangerous practices like dumping or burning, the Centre has also made a substantial impact on climate change, preventing an estimated 14,400 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.
Speaking during the partnership signing, Prime Bank Chief Executive Officer Mr. Rajeev Pant emphasized the bank’s commitment to sustainable development. “Our purpose extends beyond banking. We are invested in the long-term prosperity of Kenya,” Mr. Pant said. “By supporting the WEEE Centre, we are addressing a critical environmental issue while simultaneously fostering economic inclusion. Creating green jobs for women and youth is a direct investment in a more sustainable and equitable future for all Kenyans,” he added.
This collaboration signals a growing recognition of the circular economy—where waste is transformed into value—as a vital driver for both environmental health and economic growth in Kenya. The partnership aims to create a replicable model for how financial institutions can partner with social enterprises to build a greener, more prosperous future.
